  1. Die silberne Kirche auf schwarzem Grund ist dem alten Gelsenkirchener Stadtwappen entnommen.
  2. Die bewurzelte grüne Linde entstammt dem alten Buerschen Stadtwappen.
  3. Der rote Horster Löwe über fünf blauen Querbalken auf silbernem Grund schmückte bereits das alte Familienwappen der Herren von der Horst.
  4. Die silbernen Berghämmer auf schwarzem Grund deuten darauf hin, dass der Bergbau die wirtschaftliche Grundlage für die Stadtwerdung Gelsenkirchens bildete.
