The sugar was on a ruler, and the black marks are 1mm apart.
The image was taken with a Canon EOS 350D with an old manual 35mm-70mm Tamron zoom lens attached with a reverse ring. The magnification is approximately 2:1 (in this case it means 11mm cover the whole image width)
