Description |
English: Edge of a field of Corn or Maize, Zea mays; north-eastern Lower Saxony, Germany. The plants are ± full-grown but still not quite ready for harvest. The high density indicates that the primary purpose here is a large yield of biomass (not fruits/corn). In the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg, in 2011 about 8557 hectares of maize were grown – more than 15 % of the local agricultural land, with an average yield of 44 t/ha. A third of which was used as forage for livestock, the big rest as a raw material for fermentation in biogas plants. Corn for direct human consumption apparently plays no role in that region.
