English: Honeycomb of honey bees with eggs. The lateral walls of the cells are partly removed. The eggs are standing upright at the deepest point of the cells.
Deutsch: Bienenwabe der westlichen Honigbiene mit seitlich aufgeschnittenen Zellen und Eiern. Es handelt sich um eine von den Bienen ohne Mittelwand gebaute Wabe (Drohnenbau, Zellendurchmesser 6,9 mm). Von jeder Zelle sieht man nur 2 der 6 Seitenwände, die übrigen sind weggeschnitten. Auf dem Boden einiger Zellen sieht man Eier, die von der Bienenkönigin schräg aufrecht stehend auf den Boden der Zelle geklebt wurden. Die Eier sind etwa 1,5 mm lang und 0,4 mm dick.
Die Zellen sind parallel zur Bildebene fast waagrecht (mit einer ganz leichten Neigung nach oben) auf beiden Seiten der senkrecht stehenden Wabenmitte angeordnet. Wie man sieht, ist die Mitte zwischen den Zellen beider Seiten keine glatte Fläche, sondern verläuft etwas auf und ab. Der Boden jeder Zelle besteht aus drei leicht schräg stehenden Flächen mit dem tiefsten Punkt in der Mitte, ähnlich wie eine niedrige auf der Spitze stehende dreiseitige Pyramide. Von den 5 abgebildeten Eiern befinden sich das oberste, das mittlere und das unterste in den Zellen auf der rechten Seite des Bildes, die übrigen in den Zellen auf der linken Seite. Die Zellen auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite der Wabe sind um eine halbe Zellenbreite versetzt. Dies kann auf den Bildern unten mit Blick von oben in die Zellen und im durchscheinenden Licht beobachtet werden. Auf diese Weise wird der zur Verfügung stehende Raum optimal ausgenutzt.
