Image title | Kankan is in the north east of Guinea, in what is called Upper Guinea. The land is savannah, scrub covered plains in places made fertile by the wide River Niger and its tributaries. The population are Malinke, an ethnic group that stretches from Senegal, into neighbouring Mali and down to Cote d’Ivoire. The area has the lowest schooling rates in the country and the highest malnutrition. In response UNICEF is opening an office in the regional capital. This should reinforce our programming in the area. I was visiting the area to prepare the opening of the office and to get a better grasp of the regions challenges. |
