Summary
Detail of the Bible moralisée, French part, BNF Latin 11560, fol. 6, "execution of the faithful" ( bnf.fr digital image)
The image has nothing to do with the First Crusade (as falsely implied by the filename); it has nothing to do with the crusades in general other than in the chronological sense of its having been created just before or during the Seventh Crusade.
This image was uploaded to Wikimedia in 2005 under the misleading title of "FirstCrusade.jpg" with the claim that the image shows ta massacre of Jews at the hand of Crusaders. The reason for this was that the image had been used in such a context in a 1995 exhibition on antisemitism in Russia. An online version of this exhibition was made in 1999 ("Beyond the Pale") , where the image was given the caption "Three Jews, identifiable by their hats, are being put to the swords by Christian knights. Bible illustration; France, 1250." ( friends-partners.org) From there, the image found its way to the (former) website of the "Florida Holocaust Museum" ( 2003). From there, the image was eventually uploaded to Wikimedia.
