SOS Children's Village Sarajevo was established in Mojmila, a sloping green hill in the new part of Sarajevo. There are family houses, a community building, houses for SOS aunts (who support the SOS mothers and take care of the children when the mothers are on leave) and the village director, as well as an administration and service area. Additionally, a play and sports ground was laid out. SOS Children's Village Sarajevo offers a new home to over 100 children who have lost their parents or cannot stay with them for different reasons.

Since SOS Children's Village Sarajevo opened its gates in 1998, the work has continued to expand. Today, SOS Children's Villages is not only caring for children in need, but is also providing invaluable support and offering hope to local families and communities through a number of facilities and programmes.

Other SOS Projects in Sarajevo

An SOS Youth Home for the youngsters has been established in the city of Sarajevo.

The SOS Social Centre comprises a nursery, a youth club, a library, and rooms for workshops (foreign languages, fine and performing arts, computers), and has been very well accepted by the neighbouring population.

The Playbus is part of the SOS Social Centre and focuses on providing play and learning opportunities to disadvantaged children around Sarajevo. The SOS Nursery has initiated a programme to prevent child abandonment: Children from poor families get the opportunity of receiving pre-school education and, at the same time, counselling is offered to their parents.

Background to Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The city is famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism coexisting there for centuries.  Due to this long and rich history of religious diversity and coexistence Sarajevo has often been called the "Jerusalem of Europe".
