The Shreyas Foundation was started many years ago in Ahmedabad, the capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. This foundation is a child-care facility with a day school, a boarding school and staff quarters for the teachers. It is run on strictly vegetarian principles. The site is situated on a hill on the outskirts of the city of Ahmedabad.

The Village in Ahmedabad was constructed on the grounds of the Shreyas Foundation in 1981. It consists of four family houses and an administration and service area.

Background to Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat, India. It is the seventh largest city and eighth largest metropolitan area of India, with a city population of approximately 3.96 million and metropolitan population of 5.41 million.

Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, the city is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district and was the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970; the capital was shifted to Gandhinagar thereafter. In the middle of 1990's it was the fifth largest city in India.
