Child Sponsorship background from Kraljevo, Serbia
SOS Children's Village Kraljevo
The SOS Children's Village Kraljevo is built in the suburban community of Beranovac on the outskirts of the Middle Serbian town of Kraljevo. The immediate neighbourhood of the SOS Children's Village Kraljevo consists of a middle class residential area and the sports ground of the local football club.
The SOS Children's Village Kraljevo comprises fourteen family houses, houses for the village director and the SOS aunts (who support the SOS mothers and take care of the children when the mothers are on leave), a multipurpose building, a workshop and an administrative building. The children attend the local primary school, which is only a few hundred meters away, and the local secondary schools in town.
Since June 2003, a programme for strengthening the families in Kraljevo is being supported by SOS Children's Villages Serbia. The aim of this prevention programme is to offer the children creative free time activities and the possibility to learn social skills. The adults are informed about educational matters and child development.
Background to Kraljevo
Kraljevo has about 70,000 inhabitants and is situated at a distance of approx. 170 km south of Belgrade. Kraljevo means "king's town"; the city was given its name because of the nearby monastery where the Serbian kings were crowned in former times.
