Child Sponsorship background from La Ceiba, Honduras
SOS Children's Village La Ceiba
Puerto de La Ceiba and its surroundings were facing severe social problems. Several inundations of this agricultural region made the situation of many poor families even worse, creating a high number of abandoned children. SOS Children's Village La Ceiba has been set up on a 24-hectare building site at the village of Aldea La Ruidosa, which is situated 20 km west of the town of Puerto de La Ceiba. It is surrounded by fruit plantations, manly pineapple fields.
SOS Children's Village La Ceiba, the fourth to open in Honduras, started caring for children in 1984, with the official opening ceremony taking place in April 1985. It consists of 16 family houses, the village director's house, staff accommodation, a community building, rooms for tuition classes and medical treatment as well as an administration and service area.
Other SOS Projects in La Ceiba
The children attend public nurseries and schools in the vicinity, which is very helpful for their integration into the local community. At a certain age, SOS youths move to the SOS Youth Homes where they gradually prepare for independent living under the care of a youth supervisor.
