Sudan and South Sudan – SOS Social Centres

In Sudan there are currently two Social Centres for children and the local community, in Malakal and Ombeda-Khartoum.  Many SOS Social Centres operate via Family Strengthening Programmes, which aim to support the wider community.  Below is some information about some of the Social Centres that SOS Children runs in Sudan:

Description of SOS Social Centre/FSP:

SOS Social Centre Ombeda is the only social centre that provides social support to the community of Ombeda and also it is supporting SOS FSP in terms of advocacy and general awareness sessions for the community and the beneficiaries of the programme.

Work and Achievements:

The social centre organized 10 awareness sessions (4 of them inside the social enter buildings and the other six divided between the three towns (Khartoum Omdurman and Khartoum North) all the awareness sessions concentrated on child protection issues like (girls early marriage, girls circumcision, The importance of education, child abuse and other issues related, also the social centre conducted Advocacy program addressing issues  on Child Rights (Go to School day) also Women Rights and the social centre invited the meant people with those issues (the director of the Ministry of Education in Khartoum) (the acting leader of Women Union in Sudan) and some CBO's like Nafeer, Algars Altayeb and others

The Social Centre Organized fruitful discussions between the authorities and the targeted group to make them stand on their rights and know the meant channels to keep their rights.    

The social centre also supported the new beneficiaries of the FSP in Khartoum North with advocacy and social awareness during the start of the programme and trained more (10) from the beneficiary children to join the trained ones before them to take the lead with them in the awareness side in the schools where they are studying and they started doing that in their schools during any school celebrities as one of the constant activities to talk to the students on issues like (Respect your school, keep to school, and also general discussion on their rights)

Malakal (South Sudan)

Description of SOS Social Centre/FSP:

In September 2004, SOS Children’s Villages started operating a Family Strengthening Programme in Umbada which enables children who are at risk of losing the care of their family to grow up within a caring family environment. To achieve this, SOS Children’s Villages has been helping and co-operating with families, communities, local authorities and other service providers.
